The aim of the Welfare Section of POSK is to provide advice and ensure that elderly and sick Poles and recent Polish newcomers to the U.K. are cared for. For the last 5 years the Welfare Committee has been led by Janina Kwiatkowska with the help of Alicja Ejsmond and Jerzy Jarosz. The Welfare Committee co-operates with the Polish Consulate, the Federation of Poles in Great Britain, the Polish Women’s Federation and the Relief Society for Poles. Members of the POSK Welfare Committee visit patients in West London hospitals and elderly Poles in their homes. During hospital visits, members of the Welfare Committee act as translators to facilitate conversations with doctors and nurses thereby helping the patients and those who are looking after them. The names of patients taken from the hospital lists are placed into a central register by the Committee and passed on to the church of St Andrzej Bobola. Subsequently the priests visit the patients and give them spiritual support in their time of need. Once a year the Committee organise a Christmas party for pensioners who are members of POSK. The Welfare Committee meet in the POSK offices every Wednesday from 10:00 till 12:00 tel 020 8742 6411. |
