SUMMARY:25.10|Book launch of The Dolls We Left Behind by Eugenia Krajewska
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to the launch of The Dolls We Left Behind by Eugenia Krajewska\, with readings from the book and conversations with the author’s editor and family. In 1940\, Soviet authorities deported more than a million people from eastern Poland\, tearing families from their homes and sending them to remote labour camps. Among them was Genia Wenserska\, just a child living in the border town of Mołodeczno\, whose world was upended overnight. The Dolls We Left Behind is her remarkable memoir\, drawn from vivid memories and diary entries written in exile. It traces her family’s arrest\, survival in a Siberian penal colony\, and eventual escape with others fleeing to join General Anders’ Army to safety in Persia. The book is both a personal testament and a historical witness to a period in history which should be better known in the west and is not forgotten by the descendants of the families who survived Stalin’s ruthless policies.Saturday 25 October 2025\, 3:30 – 5:00 pmMultimedia RoomPlease join us for this celebration of Polish wartime history and memory!

SUMMARY:09.11| The presentation of the wartime German Enigma machine at POSK!
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday 9th November 2025 at the Polish and Cultural Association building (POSK) in Hammersmith\, Dr Simon Selby\, Honorary Consul for the Republic of Poland\, will be presenting POSK with a life size reconstruction model of the wartime German Enigma machine\, whose secret military messages were transcribed in seemingly indecipherable codes\, first broken by Polish cryptographers. The methods used by the Polish code breakers were later imitated and developed by British cryptographers like Alan Turing at Bletchley Park\, saved countless lives of Allied soldiers and were reputed to have shortened the Second World War by at least 2 years.\nThe process will be described at the presentation ceremony by Dr Simon Selby and by Dr Andrzej Suchcitz\, retired chief archivist at the Sikorski Institute and Polish Museum. The model will be on display at the POSK entrance hall for an indeterminate period.  It will be placed in a specially constructed display cabinet and will be accompanied by clear signage giving the history of the Enigma code breaking project in both Polish and English.
