SUMMARY:23.11| EFG London Jazz Festival 2024: Lulu Pierre & Tony Kofi: Celebrating Billie Holiday and Ben Webster!
DESCRIPTION:Lulu Pierre & Tony Kofi: Celebrating Billie Holiday and Ben Webster! – concert included in the official program of the EFG London Jazz Festival 2024! \nOne of London’s rising jazz vocalists\, Lulu Pierre\, joins forces with established tenor sax boss Tony Kofi to celebrate a great musical partnership\, that of Billie Holiday and Ben Webster. Webster played on some of Billie’s earliest hits and then joined her again in the mid-1950s for what many regards as her best late recording sessions. Accompanying Pierre and Kofi are Alex Webb (piano)\, Hamish Moore (bass) and Dan Hester (drums). \nLulu Pierre is a startling new arrival on the London jazz vocal scene\, who has proven herself to be a classic Torch Song stylist in the tradition of Julie London. She can also swing out like Sarah Vaughan\, with a voice that can move from a seductive sweetness to a lived-in rasp. With the experienced piano accompanist Alex Webb and his trio\, she performs evergreens from the Great American Songbook\, heartbreaking Torch songs and some surprising non-jazz repertoire choices. \nTony Kofi won the Best Instrumentalist Award at the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards\, Best Ensemble at the 2005 Parliamentary Jazz Awards\, Album of the Year at the 2005 BBC Jazz Awards and was nominated for an award MOBO in 2008. Born in Nottingham to West African parents\, Tony spent a four-year period at the legendary Berklee College of Music in Boston\, USA\, on a scholarship music diploma. Since then\, he has performed with the World Saxophone Quartet\, Clifford Jarvis\, Courtney Pine\, Donald Byrd\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Eddie Henderson and recorded with Jamaaladeen Tacuma and Ornette Coleman\, as well as with his own bands. With Alex Webb\, he created the show A Portrait of Cannonball and a recent tribute to Ben Webster\, which played in the London Jazz Festival of 2023. \nTickets

SUMMARY:08.12| Spectacle for children "Dziadek i Niedźwiadek"
DESCRIPTION:A play for children “Dziadek i Niedźwiadek”\, directed and performed by Lukasz Wierzbicki. The performance will be preceded by a historical talk by Dr. Slawomir Laniecki from Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz\, “Niedźwiedź Wojtek i nie tylko. About animals that accompanied soldiers”. Lukasz Wierzbicki is an author of travel and history books for children\, a lover of near and far travel. In 2009 he published the novel “Dziadek i niedźwiadek”\, dedicated to the fate of Wojtek the bear and his comrades from the Anders Army. The book was also included in the list of school reading for grades I-III of elementary schools. During the performance-performance Lukasz Wierzbicki will tell the children the story of Wojtek Bear. However\, it will not be an ordinary meeting\, but rather a journey through half the world with Wojtek Bear. The writer will be the guide on this journey. The meeting with Lukasz Wierzbicki will last about 60 minutes.

SUMMARY:08.12| Theatrical performance "Niedźwiedź Wojtek"
DESCRIPTION:Theatrical performance “Niedźwiedź Wojtek”. The play\, which is based on a text by Tadeusz Słobodzianek\, is intended for older teenagers (16 and older) and adults. The show is directed by Aldona Figura\, with actor Michal Piela performing in the play. The play had its pre-premiere special screening in August 2024 at the Capital of the Polish Language Festival in Szczebrzeszyn The duration of the play is 70 minutes. \nPerformance Description:\n“Niedźwiedź Wojtek. The monodrama” by Tadeusz Słobodzianek tells an authentic story about the famous Persian bear\, who was taken in by Polish soldiers in the nascent Anders Army during World War II and who “took part” in the Battle of Monte Cassino. The narrator of the story is Wojtek the bear himself\, and from his perspective we learn about the history of the Second Polish Corps\, from the uprising in Iraq\, through the realities of the Battle of Monte Cassino\, to the dissolution in Scotland after the war\, as well as the military daily life and individual soldiers with different backgrounds\, personalities and life stories\, to whom the bear has become attached. For them\, the bear is a mascot they play with and care about\, but also someone they can confide in about their dilemmas\, dreams and traumas. It seems as if Wojtek the bear has become a vehicle for recording human and historical history\, which he reveals to us\, modern people. It is as if he is a war veteran who recalls the times of his service and finds it difficult to find himself in the non-military reality. This is a story full of humor and emotion\, about brotherhood and courage\, but also irony and the tragedy of human (and animal) fate.
