In 1940, Soviet authorities deported more than a million people from eastern Poland, tearing families from their homes and sending them to remote labour camps. Among them was Genia Wenserska, just a child living in the border town of Mo\u0142odeczno, whose world was upended overnight.
The Dolls We Left Behind is her remarkable memoir, drawn from vivid memories and diary entries written in exile. It traces her family\u2019s arrest, survival in a Siberian penal colony, and eventual escape with others fleeing to join General Anders\u2019 Army to safety in Persia.
The book is both a personal testament and a historical witness to a period in history which should be better known in the west and is not forgotten by the descendants of the families who survived Stalin\u2019s ruthless policies.
