But Russian and Ukrainian art were intermingled for 250 years. \u2018Russification\u2019 concealed the Ukrainian origins and identity of many artists, both under the Tsars and the Bolsheviks. With a wealth of illustrations, this lecture maps three consecutive revolutions in style, as painters in both Ukraine and Russia experimented with social criticism, then modernism, and then confronted Soviet conformity.
