DESCRIPTION:POSK Gallery \nEmigration. Will I Make It? Joanna Ciechanowska: A Retrospective Exhibition (1970-2024)\n  \nThe exhibition traces Ciechanowska’s rich and versatile creative output in the context of her vicissitudes and the itinerary of her life journey as an émigré woman artist together with key formative influences. Having left Poland during the communist regime in 1977\, Joanna came to Britain where she met her English civil engineer husband. Together they were sent to many international postings – from Iran\, through Africa (including the Kingdom of Lesotho and Egypt) to Hong Kong\, and post-communist Poland\, where Ciechanowska was able to re-connect with her Polish roots\, before settling down in Great Britain. By the 1980s Ciechanowska became a distinguished international illustrator and graphic designer\, before taking on the role of POSK Gallery Director\, promoting and mentoring Polish artists in the UK. \n  \n        \n

This in-person event will take place at the Polish Social and Cultural Association POSK in Hammersmith. Whether you’re Polish or just curious about the culture\, this is the perfect opportunity to learn\, connect\, and have a great time. \nWe meet at the members only POSKlub on the 4th floor of POSK where we can have a snack\, a beverage and a chat before we start. We will learn about the history of POSK and the variety of activities that take place there. \nOur next experience will be to meet the painter Joanna Ciechanowska and to go with her to see her exhibition which is in the POSK Gallery. Next\, Joanna\, who is Director of the POSK Gallery\, will take us around the building to look at the centre art collection. After a short rest\, we will then stroll through Ravenscourt Park\, seeing an important memorial on the way\, to the beautiful Polish RC church of St Andrew Bobola. Finally\, there will be an optional stop at the Eagle pub in Askew Road from where buses can take you to wherever you need to go. \nThe cost is £18 via Eventbrite or £20 exact cash on the day. The cost of food and beverages is not included in the price.

This extraordinary event\, which has inspired youth in Poland for 40 years\, was founded and initiated by Bogusław Dziekański\, director of the renowned Jazz Club Pod Filarami. \nThe Small Academy of Jazz stands as the oldest initiative of its kind for informal jazz education in Europe\, a fact substantiated by extensive research into its achievements. Over the years\, MAJ has not only celebrated jazz but also fostered contemporary music culture rooted in Afro-American genres such as blues and jazz. \nOrganised by the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) in London and Maezztro Music Education\, this event features a unique partnership with Yamaha Music London\, the flagship store in Soho and the largest music store in the UK. Yamaha will provide several instruments for the presentation\, allowing our musicians to showcase their talent.
