‘Hypnosis’ is a play with a ‘psychosomatic’ theme, as the director described it: a patient seeks help from yet another doctor; all other methods fail, and the doctor decides to use hypnosis, which was in vogue at the time (the play was written in the 1940s). The complexity of the patient-doctor relationship leads to a happy ending – mutual affection between the characters. The premiere took place on 7 December 1962 in London, starring Tola Korian and Zygmunt Kawka, with the author himself directing.
‘Hypnosis’ is one of Antoni Cwojdziński’s most frequently staged plays. The author, who spent the last years of his life in London, travelled to Warsaw in 1964 so that the Teatr Współczesny could stage ‘Hypnosis’ under his direction. Zbigniew Chrzanowski:
